Reflections

A recent image by Cromer Art Trail artist Robert Downie. Robert uses pen, ink & gouache to produce these delightful pictures, reminiscent of the travel posters or children’s book illustration from an earlier time

The pen and ink outlines give a very strong structure to the paintings whilst the use of gouache produces flat but very vibrant colour blocks. Robert says that he doesn’t want to tell the viewer anything, rather he seeks to make a work that evokes memories of childhood or holidays, peaceful and happy times in contrast to an increasingly challenging world.

Here a solitary gull is resting on the breakwater, reflected in the calm sea on a still summer’s day in North Norfolk. We all remember days like this, when time seems to pause and we can reflect on everything without the rush and pressures of everyday life. Precious moments indeed.
